Girls Bike NYC: Little Red Lighthouse

Girls Bike NYC: Little Red Lighthouse

My second Sunday ride with Girls Bike NYC was to the Little Red Lighthouse, located just under the George Washington Bridge. Do you know how many times I’ve ridden past this thing without even noticing it?! It is RIGHT before the gnarly hill in Fort Washington Park that I had to hike-a-bike up heading out of the city on the micro-tour I did back in May, so maybe I’m always too worried about my impending death on the hill to notice the lighthouse.

We started at Grand Army Plaza, which I am always grateful for, and rode North on Vanderbilt to get to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We took the Manhattan Bridge into the city and cut across through SoHo to get to the Hudson River Greenway.

Kate, the leader of Girls Bike NYC, told the group that the Hudson River Greenway is the busiest bike path in the country, which I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised about. The ride up to the Lighthouse wasn’t too bad since we left early enough to beat some of the crowds and we were in luck since the weather was changing from overcast to clear and sunny.

Once we got there, the photo shoots commenced!

This lady wasn’t even part of our group but asked to pose with one of our bikes in front of the lighthouse!

Kate was able to get a great group photo of us.

We asked a passerby to take a group photo with Kate in it but I don’t think he got the memo about the lighthouse being the focal point:

We spent a little more time hanging out under the bridge for a break before the ride back to Brooklyn.

We ended at Sit & Wonder, a cute little coffee shop in Prospect Heights, and discussed Girls Bike NYC shirts and kits, the best cycling glasses, and the Rapha 100. I even found a few people willing to do 5 AM laps in Prospect Park with me!!!

The next day, I rode to brunch and ended the day with a little crash.

WARNING: Blood and bruising pictures!

I was riding home with my friend and turned around to see if he was behind me. When I did this, I lost my balance and rode into a parked car. LOL. I am ok, my bike is ok, the car is ok. My dignity, along with my leg, is a little bruised. It’s been fun following this injury on its life journey.

I didn’t ride much this week and spent most of my time nursing my injury and taking care of these cute little kitties:
