Winter Efforts
New Year, new therapist, same bikes - I’m hoping this is my winning combination.
I have some personal goals that I’ve started working on, not so much because of the new year, but because they are things I should have started addressing months ago! Having been lucky to find a great, new therapist, I feel like I am starting to move in a good direction. Part of what I’m working on is creating smaller, more attainable goals and not beating myself up if I don’t immediately accomplish them.
One goal was to ride my road bike on my trainer more regularly, which is great right now, considering the frigid temperatures we have been experiencing in New York. To accomplish that, I first had to set up my bike for my trainer, a process that includes switching out my rear wheel with the spare training wheel that I use when riding indoors. Normally I would try to accomplish all of this immediately but I will tell you now that it took me a full week to finally get this baby set up.
Did I need an entire week’s time for this set up? No, I literally needed 20 minutes but what matters to me is that I finally did set it up. I checked my spare wheel and tire, readied them for riding, installed some new sensors on my road bike and even wound up cleaning and reorganizing the remainder of my office to make the space a bit neater and more enjoyable to be in. I have been fostering some more kittens for a few months now so we also got some play time in in the process!
I think in breaking down my goal of riding on my trainer regularly, each part felt achievable, rather than overwhelming. Taking my time setting up my bike then motivated me to do the office organizing that I had been meaning to do for a few months.
Did I ride my bike after I set it up? Nope, not for a few more days. But my point here is that I eventually did! I donned my new All Bodies on Bikes socks and re-watched Summer House on my iPad because we all need those outrageous reality shows in our lives once in a while. I even got a visit from Martin van Buren during my ride!
It was a quick session, about 30 minutes spent on the bike, covering 8 miles but it felt easy and it felt good. So here’s to taking small steps towards achieving my goals. As long as I keep taking them in the right direction!
